Międzyodrze is one of the most important autumn roosts of cranes (Grus grus) in Poland.

Amazingly, cranes have been using the Międzyodrze as a stopover and roosting site for at least 100 years!

The famous Szczecin ornithologist Paul Robien, in his 1920 book on the birds of Szczecin and the surrounding area (“Die Vogelwelt des Bezirks Stettin”), wrote about the inter-Odra cranes in this way (translated by Jerzy Giergielewicz and Lukasz Lawicki):

“Every year in March and April, and often still in May, great flying keys of cranes, and later in September and October, huge autumn migrating flocks, gather by the hundreds and thousands especially in the Oder valley between Gryfino and Mochy. Those masses of birds, those departing in the morning from the roosting site and arriving again in the evening at the roosting site. It has to be seen, to hear the deafening scream of the night, to imagine the flocking life of the animals.”

In these spectacular photos, one such roosting site, also seen from the flight of a crane, was captured by Piotr Piznal.
