Between February 24 and March 28, 2025, we took part in a comprehensive maintenance of artificial kingfisher nests which was as part of environmental compensation for the investment project “Modernization of the Świnoujście–Szczecin Fairway to a Depth of 12.5 m.”

The scope of work included inspection, repair, and modification of existing nests as well as the installation of new ones in previously unused locations. All tasks were conducted in cooperation with an ornithologist to ensure suitable conditions for these unique and protected birds.

As part of the maintenance, defective components were replaced, nesting chambers and tunnels were cleaned, structural stability was improved, joints were sealed, and the nests were protected against adverse weather conditions. Special attention was given to ensuring maximum safety and comfort for future inhabitants by recreating natural habitat characteristics inside the nests and integrating them aesthetically into the surroundings (riverbanks and tree root systems).

A total of 10 nests were upgraded—some in their original spots, others in entirely new locations. The work also included marking of the nesting sites and cleaning the surrounding areas of large amounts of debris.

These efforts represent an important step in the protection of the kingfisher—a species under strict protection—and reaffirm our commitment to responsible project implementation that respects and supports the natural environment.
